J.P. Morgan MD leaves London for CFO role in Prague

A managing director in J.P. Morgan’s leveraged finance team in London has quit to join a power company based in the Czech Republic.

Call it part of the pre-Brexit exodus from London if you like, but Brendan Massam, who worked as an MD in J.P Morgan’s leveraged finance team for the past ten years, has just joined Czech power firm EP Power Europe as chief financial officer.

Massam joined J.P. Morgan in September 2007 after nearly a decade at Deutsche Bank in London where he was a director in emerging markets focused leveraged finance.

The move across to EP Power is not as random as it seems – it’s a client of J.P. Morgan and it’s therefore likely that Massam already had a close relationship. It’s also indicative of a broader trend of senior investment bankers going into industry roles.

Massam has also left the UK to go into another EU country. While banks have yet to start wholesale relocations of their London staff to the EU after Brexit, but staff at Goldman Sachs, HSBC and Citigroup have reportedly started moving back to their home countries voluntarily and many are finding the whole experience decidedly more pleasant.

J.P. Morgan declined to comment on the move.
